Box Office Breakdown: Lakeview Terrace Perched at #1
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: DreamWorks, FOCUS, MGM, Lionsgate, Picturehouse, Paramount, Sony, Warner Bros, Action, Adaptation, Animation, Drama, Family, Period, Sequels, Comedy, Thrillers, Box Office, Lists, New Releases,
Maybe folks were just out celebrating the last official days of summer?
Over the past few weeks, theater chains have seen less than stellar numbers…and the last three days were no exception. Seven days ago, only four films were able to get past the $10 million mark. Today, only two had earned that right to brag.
Topping the box office this weekend was Lakeview Terrace, the Samuel L. Jackson/Patrick Wilson thriller. The Neil LaBute film pulled in only $15 million, nearly $4 million more than the chart’s second-place finisher (Burn After Reading). Coming in third was My Best Friend’s Wedding, a Lionsgate entry starring Kate Hudson and Dane Cook. The (supposed) comedy fell below expectations and earned only $8.2 million. This gave Hudson her lowest debut since 2003’s Alex & Emma.

Here’s a quick look at some of the casting announcements made recently:
Michael Douglas: Douglas - who hasn’t been in a hit in quite some time - has had his name attached to two different projects in the past few weeks. For Solitary Man, the Oscar-winner will return to a subject he is quite familiar with: infidelity. Michael is set to play a car magnate whose life is affected by business and marital problems. Production on Solitary begins in November. Meanwhile, Douglas is also planning to reteam with his Traffic director (Steven Soderbergh) for a biopic on Liberace. Michael will tackle the role of the flamboyant character while Matt Damon is in discussions to play Scott Thorson, a man who sued the pianist for palimony.

Christian Bale Considered for George Bush Role
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Lionsgate, Drama, Political, Casting, Trailers,
Having seen Josh Brolin dressed up as George W. Bush, it’s hard to envision anyone else playing our Commander-in-Chief. But according to Oliver Stone, Brolin wasn’t the first person he had in mind for W..
In an interview with GQ, the controversial director admitted he originally wanted to land a much bigger star—for the movie and for the financing.
“Originally I went for Christian Bale. We did some rigorous prosthetic tests and spent a lot of dough—thousands and thousands of dollars—and then Christian said, ‘I just don’t feel like I can do it.’ I met Josh and liked him. He was more rural Americana. But man, he was scared s**tless.”
Wow. While I’m sure Brolin will do a fine job - his career has really peaked in the past year - I can only imagine that Bale would have taken the movie to an entire different level. I’m just surprised to hear that there was something out there Christian couldn’t do…
W. is scheduled to open this October 17—several weeks before the presidential election. Until then, a preview for the movie can be seen here.

William Shatner Denies Being Offered Star Trek Role
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Paramount, Science Fiction, Sequels, Casting, Celeb News, Upcoming Releases,
So was William Shatner’s omission from the upcoming Star Trek movie a choice J.J. Abrams made…or was it ultimately Shatner’s decision? Well, the answer differs depending on who you ask.
Last year, the actor admitted he was bothered by his exclusion from the highly-anticipated prequel.
“I couldn’t believe it. I’m not in the movie at all. Leonard [Nimoy], God bless his heart, is in, but not me. I thought, what a decision to make, since it obviously is a decision not to make use of the popularity I have to ensure the movie has good box office. It didn’t seem to be a wise business decision.”

Now you really didn’t think the MPAA would make things easy for Kevin Smith, did ya?
Back in July, we told you the Clerks director was having difficulty securing an R-rating for his new film. Although Smith has since successfully appealed, he’s also been forced to rework his movie’s poster.
In Zack and Miri Make a Porno, Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks star as financially-strapped roomies. When the two find themselves in desperate straits, they decide to produce their own adult films.

Ben Affleck will soon be following up his critically-acclaimed work on Gone Baby Gone with another Massachusetts-set drama.
For The Town, Affleck will be wearing three hats at the same time. In addition to directing and acting, the Oscar winner (Good Will Hunting) will make tweaks to a screenplay already started by Peter Craig and Chuck Hogan. (Hogan is the author of the book - Prince of Thieves - on which this movie is based.) Last year, Ben and Aaron Stockard worked on adapting the Dennis Lehane novel for Gone.
In the Warner Bros. production, Ben will play a career thief who becomes romantically-involved with a bank manager. Unfortunately, an FBI agent hunting the criminal also has his eyes set on the same woman.
Affleck, who is currently filming Mike Judge’s Extract, already has two films scheduled for release next year. He’s Just Not That Into You hits theaters in February while State of Play arrives in April.

Around this same time last year, Tyler Perry was beating George Clooney in a battle at the box office. Now the Sexiest Man Alive is having his day.
This past weekend, cineplexes were kept busy with a handful of new releases. Although each film had a chance of reaching #1, Burn After Reading - starring Clooney, Brad Pitt and Frances McDormand - emerged as the eventual winner. But the news wasn’t so bad for the other three contenders. Theatergoers clearly starving for fresh material placed all four wide release entries into the chart’s four top slots.
